Why I’m Running

As a public defender, I’ve spent my career standing alongside and fighting for people.

I’m ready to bring that fight to Albany on behalf of my community.

I’m Eli Northrup. I’m a public defender and policy advocate and I’m running for Assembly in New York’s 69th District.

I may be new to politics, but representing people is what I’ve done for my entire career. I understand what representation means — it means that you listen, you show up, and you keep your word. That’s what I will do for my community.

In my current role as Policy Director for the Criminal Defense Practice at The Bronx Defenders, I lead a group of advocates fighting for policies to bring fairness and dignity to our criminal legal system.

I’ve seen how the same dynamics that shape our criminal courts also play out in our State Legislature: those with money and power wield access and influence. We have elected officials who are more interested in politics than people, and who are not accountable to our communities.

I’m running for Assembly to bring a new perspective to politics and to fight for a New York where everyone feels safe, recognized, and supported.

My vision extends beyond criminal legal reform to address critical issues such as affordable housing, accessible mental health care, and universal child care. I will fight to protect our environment, community gathering spaces, and to ensure that older New Yorkers can stay in their homes and have access to the services that they need.

I envision a political system that prioritizes people over politics.

Together, we’re building a broad coalition of progressive voices, committed to fighting for the real change New York deserves.
